Rewriting fundraising records: All eyes on a seven-figure sum this Write a Book in a Day

There’s been plenty of tips and tricks shared about creating the best book possible during Write a Book in a Day, but today we’d like to shine a light on the other crucial element of Australia’s most inspiring writing challenge.

Fundraising.

2025 marks ten years of The Kids’ Cancer Project’s facilitation of Write a Book in a Day. Taken over in 2015, the competition is managed by the charity’s Campaigns department, with three main goals:

  • For Australian students to test their literacy and illustration skills against their national counterparts
  • To raise much-needed funds for Australian kids with cancer

Registration fees and sponsorships of writers directly benefit kids with cancer nationwide, as we work towards our mission of a 100% survival rate with no long-term effects.

Put simply, we want more kids back in the classroom with their peers.

“Write a Book in a Day has become a cornerstone of our fundraising model, and by extension, our research strategy,” says The Kids’ Cancer Project CEO, Owen Finegan.

“Each year we’ve seen an incremental increase in participants and subsequent funds raised.

“It’s our job to empower our writers and team coordinators to engage with their communities to maximise funds for researchers tirelessly pursuing more effective, less harmful treatments for kids with cancer.”

The Kids’ Cancer Project’s target of raising $1 million in 2025 via the campaign seems ambitious, but the growth of the competition has instilled confidence within those involved.

We’re also at $937,000 with just over four weeks left in the competition, so we need your help now more than ever to get us over the line!

With that amount of money, we could ensure that 100 children will receive a comprehensive, long-term follow-up program after treatment. This will ensure they receive the necessary ongoing medical care and psychological support.

With 90 kids in Australia diagnosed with cancer each month, it means that we can support the recovery of each and every one of them, and then some.

It’s why we need your support now more than ever as we approach our final days of fundraising.
