AI Regulations: Write a Book in a Day 2026

As it begins to evolve into a tool used for many every day activities, artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming more commonplace in schools.
Utilised by teachers to help craft lessons, students to learn and process information and parents to assist their kids, AI is the new frontier for pedagogy.
Naturally, given its standing within schools across Australia, Write a Book in a Day is conscious of AI’s power and ability to assist students (or in this instance, participants) in crafting text and illustrations.
To ensure that both Teaching Coordinators and Teams are aware of the limits to utilising AI during Australia’s most inspiring writing competition, we thought this article might help.

Writing

It’s all in the name for Write a Book in a Day – so it would seem – but just so we’re clear, that doesn’t mean AI Writes a Book in a Day.
Our judges aren’t supercomputers and we don’t use Turnitin, meaning that we’re utilising the vigilance of teaching coordinators and our readers to determine if AI is being used to help students craft their masterpiece.
In other words, Write a Book in a Day has a zero-tolerance policy for AI to be used for writing.
This includes, but is not limited to, using AI to brainstorm ideas, to identify gaps in stories, or to help build out a plot, or to use it for grammar and restructuring.
Put simply, we think Teams and Writers can produce far better than what AI can!

Illustrating

I’m sure you’ve seen an AI-generated image that doesn’t quite look right. Maybe the faces or limbs don’t match, there’s fingers missing on hands, or even a glossy finish…
Remember that zero-tolerance policy we mentioned? The same applies to the above.
Teams are asked not to utilise AI for illustration. This includes generating imagery, or ‘copying’ an AI-generated image.
From our perspective, the use of AI for illustrating is much easier for us to pick up. If you use it, you’ll get caught!
We want writers to create illustrations using either traditional or digital drawing methods.
There is no issue with using copyright free imagery to create collages and unique artwork, so it’s not like you’re on your own!
Writers who create entirely original covers and illustrations can be nominated for an illustration award.
We don’t want AI taking those awards away from the brilliant artists in the competition.
We can’t wait to see your masterpiece, crafted by you and your teammates, not by Chat, Claude or Gemini.
