The fundraisers that helped us rewrite records in 2024

2024 was our biggest ever year for Write a Book in a Day, where we managed to collectively fundraise over $920,000 for vital kids’ cancer research.

That sum of money was accrued by some 1937 teams from 523 schools. Whether it’s $5 or $500, every cent brings us closer to realising our dream – of no child dying from cancer.

“We’re so thankful and so proud of each of our fundraisers who contributed to our greatest ever Write a Book in a Day,” says The Kids’ Cancer Project CEO, Owen Finegan.

“Without their support, we simply would not be able to fund research into better treatments and outcomes for kids with cancer.”

Mohamad D from Greenacre’s Al Sadiq College was the winner of our individual fundraiser prize in 2024. Mohamad and his community managed to raise $11,489 for children’s cancer research, a truly incredible feat.

Mohamad says he was inspired by wanting to improve the lives of kids with cancer.

Mohamad’s entire team, ASC Wonders, took out the top spot for team fundraisers, managing to raise $14,284 during their Write a Book in a Day campaign.

“I was encouraged to enter the Write a Book in a Day fundraiser by my teachers and friends,” he says.
“I hope the money helps researchers find a cure and the best treatments to help kids recover from their illnesses.”

Arden Anglican College’s Green and White teams placed second and third respectively behind ASC wonders, raising $9,045 and $5,720 respectively.

From Arden Anglican,

“Overall, it was a great experience to be representing Arden. I loved spending time with peers, enhancing my vocabulary and raising money for a good cause,” says Arden Year 6 student, Adrian W.

His fellow pupil, Iris Y, agrees.

“Write a Book in a Day was a unique experience that helped me develop my creativity, teamwork skills, and story writing,” she says.

“Both teams came together extremely well, and collectively, we were able to submit two amazing and imaginative books within twelve hours.”

Second place for the individual fundraisers went to Barker College Junior School’s Amy S, who came in with $4,610 in fundraising for The Kids’ Cancer Project.

Amy says she was delighted to have been a part of writing a book in a day and hopes that the funds she has raised will assist in funding a problem-free future for childhood cancer patients.

“I was encouraged to fundraise money to help kids with cancer and hoped that the money would help with getting more technology to help kids beat cancer.”

Ben M, from Nowra Anglican College, was ranked third for individual fundraisers in 2024. Ben’s inspiration comes from close to home, which helped him motivate his community to dig deep.

“The reason I was so encouraged to raise money for The Kids’ Cancer Project is because two of my grandparents were diagnosed with cancer in 2023.

“It was sad to witness the effects cancer had on my grandparents and entire family. When the fundraising started, my two grandparents sadly passed away, which gave me the added drive to raise as much money in their honour. I could only imagine the effect it would have on a child and their family.

“I hope the money I’ve raised goes towards finding cures for these terrible illnesses. I also hope the money goes to support the families that are having to witness their loved ones go through their journey with cancer.”

Ben’s supervisor, Nowra Anglican College English teacher, Jamie Barnes, is ecstatic with both the writing and fundraising efforts of all of their students.

“We are so proud of all of our students who are so enthusiastic and compassionate for such an important cause,” Jamie says.

Write a Book in a Day is truly one of the highlights of our cocurricular program at Nowra Anglican College as an event where students can proudly display their creativity, teamwork and empathetic hearts to create a meaningful story for children. Our students and teachers love the opportunity to connect with the ability of stories to uplift individuals undergoing adversity and inspire others with tales of joy, adventure and friendship.

“It is incredibly important to all of us at the College to be of service to our wider community, and this event is one that shows students the real power and impact they personally can have through fundraising and raising awareness of childhood cancer research. It is an event of joy and kindness that inspires and challenges us all.”
